INTERFACE SHEAR STRENGTH

ASTM D5321

This test is used to determine shear strength parameters (cohesion and the angle of friction) of a geosynthetic against soil, or a geosynthetic against another geosynthetic, using a minimum of three normal loads and a constant rate of deformation.  The limiting values of shear stresses are plotted against the applied normal stresses, and the shear strength parameters are generally determined by a best fit straight line.

 

GCL INTERNAL/INTERFACE SHEAR STRENGTH

ASTM D6243

This test is used to determine the internal shear resistance of a GCL or the interface shear resistance between a GCL and an adjacent material.  

 

WATER ABSORPTION

DIN 18132, BS EN ISO 10769

These test methods are used to determine the water absorption capacity of fine soils/bentonite.  A dry mass of soil is placed on a saturated porous plate, and the mass increase of the soil over a 24 hour period is recorded.
